SHAME (2011) OPENING SCENE

  • 26 cuts in approximately 8 minutes
  • reactionary scene whose purpose is to establish a character
  • relation to Kuleshov effect --> cuts are crucial - we need to know what he is looking at in order to understand his reactions and understand his character motivations
  • jumps in time and space between cuts to let audience know that he is pre-occupied with thoughts of that morning and the previous night // the only thing that distracts him from this is the girl on the train, aka the prospect of more sex
  • the musical score crucially sets the mood // moving orchestrations set a sad, almost melancholic tone to let the audience know that this display - which could very easily read as creepy/predatory considering the content - is actually one of desolation
